England BISF Street Register

index england

With the help of our members have compiled the worlds first BISF street register of BISF House locations in England, Scotland and Wales.

To aid page loading times, we have now separated the index into 3 pages, i.e England, Scotland and Wales.

This page shows the listings for England only, you will find links to the Scotland and Wales indexes by selecting the Street Index link on the menu above.

The list has grown enormously thanks to your help but we still need more suggestions for those few hidden streets that have not yet been included.

If you live in or know of a road within England that contain BISF Houses, then please let us know in the comments section below. We can then add your Street suggestion to the worlds only UK register of these unique properties.

  1. We have just purchased what we believe to be a BSIF house – if anyone could confirm it would be greatly appreciated. Kings Road KT15 3BQ. We were so excited to find this site and see the amazing things that have been done to BSIF houses!!

  2. Hello Zayrra2014, welcome to our forum and thank you for your valuable submission.

It’s great to see new locations added to the register, especially ones that we appear to have overlooked during our location search.

We hope your purchase goes smoothly.

    Many thanks

  3. Hi FrankieAB, if you reply is to a specific person, you can use the @ sign before their display name.

That way, the member will know you have relied to them personally.

  4. I remember seeing your house when it was first on the show in 2012 but missed the re-visit in 2013.ย  I saw it again this morning with the valuation from last month and wondered why it looked familiar until I realised that I used to park in Halcot Avenue when I worked at the Civic Offices for a couple of months earlier this year and when the weather was nice, we would have lunch in the park by your house.ย  You’ve done a great job (helped by ‘She who must be obeyed’! ๐Ÿ™‚ )ย  and your little dog is lovely. ย

  5. Thank you for a great contribution to the list, it looks like we missed that street during our search of the Plymouth area but we’re so glad you brought it to our attention.

    Thank you again

  6. Also some in military Road, Plymouth. :-ย,-4.0943274,3a,75y,220.83h,87.49t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sPPmWCUYxdh-gyzLzRg_dpA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en&authuser=0

  7. Warmest of welcomes Mike!

Thank you for your valuable input which I’ve added to the location index.

Glad to hear that you’ve started renovation on your new purchase.

The initial rip out and planning phase is probably my favourite time of owning one of these houses due to the scope of improvements than can be undertaken, especially when starting from scratch.

It would be great if you could take some photos of your progress and if you do come across any issues or questions, we’ll always do our best to assist if we can.

    Best regards

  8. Proud owner of a BISF house in Newton, Hyde (nr Manchester) SK14 4TBBought it last week and currently ripping out the older fittings & getting ready to replace with new shiny ones! There are few streets with approximately 50 BISF houses here – Busheyfield Close, Pimlott Grove &ย Camerton Place.Looking forward to being part of the BISF online “community”!Mike

  9. Hello Solz, thank you for your valuable contribution.

Just as we start to think we must have the majority of streets listed by now, a few more pop up, thanks to the assistance of our readers like yourself.

I can confirm that the houses are indeed BISF construction, which is one specific build type on its own, rather than categorising all steel frame houses as BISF.

If the house hasn’t been insulated externally, you should find a rendered wall to the lower elevation and classic steel sheeting to the upper.

In it’s original construction form the walls structure can be seen in this diagram.

    BISF detail 2
    BISF detail 1
    bisf frame
    bisf cross

  10. Can you add Coveham Crescent, Cobham, KT11 1AR please.

I’m currently looking to buy a house and I’ve found out with help of this site that a lot of the houses on this street are BISF and I’m trying to understand more about them.

Anyone who could identify the name of this particular build and show pics of the external wall construction would be helpful as if we can buy this it does need a lot of internal work and maybe external wall insulation?

    Many thanks

  11. Thanks for the update Bloop Bleep, that’s a great update for the list.

I’m surprised that these houses haven’t received an external insulation upgrade yet. Apart from the windows and the roofs, they appear almost original which is surprising, as a great deal of the Northern housing stock has been upgraded.

I’ll add the to the list very shortly and thanks again!

  12. Thanks once again for your valuable input Barrie45

I know I’ve already replied to your post but we appear to have lost some data following a site reset, hence why this reply appears to be very late when it’s actually not.

  13. Hi Rod, thank you once again for your input. I added your streets to the list back in 2016 but due to some data that we lost on our site, I’m just re replying to some of the old responses.
    Many Thanks

  14. Hi Lucy, the houses in Earls Close are actually Tarran Newland houses which are often mistaken for BISF Houses. The ones that I have seen have been refurbished to a very high standard with brick slips, making identification even more difficult but thank you for your input.

  15. Hi Lucy, thank you for your input but the properties you mention aren’t actually BISF Houses although I must agree that in many ways they do look very similar.
Modus (Amy Chivers Precast Concrete House

The houses at this location are actually Modus houses, manufactured by the Amey Chivers Housing Co. Ltd
They were Designed by Alex Robertson, Peter Francis and Partners R H Sims and they were built around 1966โ€“70.
They are in fact quite a rare property with only around 280 built in the UK.
They are sometimes also called the Amey Chivers house. Amey Chivers went on to become the company that we know as Amey today.

Unlike the BISF house that was built with a steel frame, these properties were constructed from Pre Cast Concrete.

I’m very glad you found these though as I had been searching for some of these properties to investigate for quite a while so many thanks indeed.

  16. I bought a BISF house in Halcot Avenue, Bexleyheath, Kent DA6 which isn’t on the database which is surprising as there must be 200 BISF houses here. The locals call it “Tin town” but I have found the house to be excellent. Extremely good value at ยฃ117,00 at auction. Appeared on ” Homes under the Hammer” and the presenter, Lucy, went on and on about concrete cancer etc. and when I told them they were wrong in the second episode and that they are steel framed houses with no concrete cancer problems etc., they edited out all my comments! So much for TV property “experts”!

  17. Thanks Ed, the more the better, there are still numerous streets to be added but its a long process. We will et there in the end though. :0)

The page is loading a little slow at the moment as there appears to be a problem with the code in the table but I hope to have it sorted soon.

  18. There are BISF houses in Wantage on Courtenay Rd and nearby, so perhaps this is where the idea came from. In its original condition the most distinctive things about a BISF house are probably the profiled steel cladding upstairs, protruding steel surrounds round the windows and unique porch/canopy/railing combination over the front door. If it’s been modified, these things can have been covered or removed, so looking in the loft for the steel structure of the roof and gable is going to be the best diagnostic. Also the size, shape and positions of the windows are quite distinctive if you compare with a photo of a known BISF house.

  19. Hi Cwma
I’ve had a good look in your street and I can’t see any BISF houses there.

Do you think your house is steel framed in construction?

There are many different types of steel framed house built, the difficulty is finding which particular one.

    Hope this helps :0)

  20. Hi Cammy
    Thank you for your addition.

To be honest, I’m amazed that we appear to have missed Page road and the other streets, I know we have most of Coventry listed but I shall update the list asap.

    Many thanks

  21. Currently in the process of buying my rented BISF property, one of 42, in PAGE ROAD, COVENTRY. This is one of a dozen or more roads which form part of the estate of CANLEY all comprising of BISF semi-detached houses.

  22. Hello,

There are a number of these houses in the DD3 area of Dundee, Scotland..Nithsdale Avenue, Lauderdale Avenue, Teviotdale Avenue, Annandale Avenue, Eskdale Avenue, Livingstone Place, Livingstone Terrace. Lived there from 1959 onwards. My Grandmother obtained one of the house after the war and we have lived there ever since. My mother has lived there since she was nine years old and is now 79 years old. They are being sold for around ยฃ80.000. The interior was ripped out and insulated after a woman died back in the 80s. The house went up in fire in less than five minutes and she couldn’t escape through the windows so they were all refurbished. Lovely scheme and very sought after.

  23. Hello Gavtech and the warmest of welcomes to our community and thank you for your excellent additions to our list.
We set up the site for the exact reason that you mentioned. There really was very little information available regarding BISF houses and thanks to our excellent members and contributors we now have a growing resource for everyone. The feedback has been amazing and we hope that the site will continue to grow year by year.
It has only been possible with contributions just like yours here today and for that we are extremely grateful!
Once again welcome and Merry Christmas :0)

  24. Hello,
I’ve just joined the site. Very interesting it is too.
The last time I deep-searched into BISF houses was some years ago and there was very little available material so it is welcome to find this site running.

I have some streets for you to add to the register in the Newcastle upon Tyne area…as follows:

    Acomb Gardens NE5
    Hesleyside Drive NE5
    Kirkheaton Place NE5
    Netherby Drive NE5
    Heatherslaw Road NE5
    Deanham Gardens NE5
    Cheeseburn Gardens NE5
    Benton Park Road NE7
    Parkside Avenue NE7
    Westerdale Place NE6
    Wharfedale Place NE6
    Aln Avenue NE3
    Chatton Wynd NE3
    Tarset Place NE3
    Etal Place NE3

  25. Hi again. Looks like I was wrong as well. I just pulled out an old paper map which puts it as East Mount Avenue.
Are you absolutely positive that the East Mount Avenue properties are ‘Spooner’? As an estate agents selling one of the properties say that they have been informed that they are BISF. I can not find any information on the Spooner houses save to say some were timber framed and others steel. It’s kind of putting me off buying as I don’t have definitive proof one way or the other.
As you say they “…do look very similair from the outside.” So, are their clues from the interior I could use to satisfy my curiosity?
    Thanks, Bryan

  26. Thanks for the correction :0) It was 02.20 when I wrote the reply and my old eyes were failing lol.
I have edited the name. Oddly the street sign says East Mount yet most of the records list it as one word, Eastmount as you do. Is Eastmount the correct wording?
That last image shows another familar house type. I will have to research more to id it.

  27. Thanks again for a most informative post. Slight correction however. The street you have identified as Spooner Steel framed for me is called Eastmount Avenue not East Moor. Looks like i’ve got to do some research on Spooner Steel frames now. Didn’t realise this would get so interesting! Lol. Thanks again for your time.

p.s Have you seen the ‘Turmarr Villas’ estate in Easington, East Riding Of Yorkshire, HU12 0TJ

  28. Bryanxst
The properties on East Mount are Spooner Steel framed houses not BISF although they do indeed look very similar from the outside.
Grammer School Road are definitely BISF and I think Hartoft just misses out. I’ve mapped most of the estate nearby already I hope but will check later.
Thanks for your post, it is a subject that needed to be discussed but I must admit even I get confused sometimes and I have wrongly listed some streets as BISF when on closer inspection they aren’t
I will keep digging to see what else I can find but have a look at this post that I just created as a result. I hope it helps everyone regarding identification. :0)

  29. Thanks for that and the associated post on non standard housing from the post war period, most informative. If we still go for the Newland Tarran house (incidentally, designed & manufactured in Hull) we will be sure to ask for a PRC certificate.

  30. Hi Bryanxst
That house in Appleton with a front extension is a Newland House manufactured by Tarran Industries. It is also classed as defective under the 1984 Housing defects act which will make it very difficult to obtain a mortgage on unless it has certification.
It is also known as the Tarran-Newland and was built between 1944 and 1956 and it is of PRC construction. Precast reinforced concrete.

I have been receiving a lot of e-mails lately about similar properties that do look very much like BISF houses but which have subtle differences. Many on investigation turn out to not be BISF properties.
I shall create a post showing similar designs and update you when it’s complete.

  31. Thanks Ed,
That explains the difference in prices of houses on opposite sides of the street! Their were some murmerings from an estate agents about 51 Appleton being “precast”.
Am I right in thinking that 76, Appleton Road, Hu5 4pg (sorry about the small pic) is neither BISF or PRC construction? And that this house on Castleton Avenue is BISF? (2nd pic)

  32. Hi and welcome Bryan! At a glance 51 Appleton Road looks as though it is a BISF house that has been rendered over, but looking closer and especially in Google street view I would say it is not, I think it is some other type of system-built house but the walls appear to be concrete panels (precast reinforced concrete [PRC]).

The reasons I don’t think it is a BISF house, even one that has been modified are:

    a) the living room extends out further than the floor above. If it was just one house like this, it could have been an extension but the whole row are the same.

    b) the roof pitch seems shallower than a BISF house.

    c) the windows appear slightly different shapes, especially the small windows which are square in that house but rectangular in a BISF

    d) the chimney seems to be exactly on the roof apex, but in a BISF house it’s just behind the apex.

Interestingly enough though, these ‘mystery’ houses are mixed amongst the BISF houses. We have a similar pattern in Bath where there are BISF and PRC Cornish houses on the same road.

  33. Hi, New member here looking for info on BISF in Hull. We are looking to buy possibly a BISF property as we seem to have been drawn to this kind of house design. One property we have looked at is on Eastmount Avenue, Hul,l HU8 9EN in Eat Hull. The houses on Eastmount Avenue are definitely BISF and should be added to the list. The neighbouring estate of Holm Garth Drive also appears to be BISF but I can not at the moment confirm this. There are more streets to the West of Hull including: Grammar School Road, Hartoft Road, Cropton Road, Hayburn Avenue, Welburn Grove, Brompton Close, Hutton Close, Slingsby Close, Castleton Avenue, Knapton Avenue, Ebberson Grove, Salton Avenue, Thorgill Grove and Appleton Road;all part of a large estate off Bricknell Avenue HU5.
I’m particularly interested to know what type of house this is at 51 Appleton Road, HU5 4 PD as we are interested in buying. If anyone could help out with identifying whether any or all of these streets are in fact BISF houses, especially 51 Appleton Road I would be most grateful.

  34. hello all
i am a new member and i am trying to get some information if possible, firstly i live in Ellesmere drive, Seaham, Co. Durham, SR7 8DS. Here goes over the pass 6 months or so the majority of houses in my street have had some form of external insulation done to their houses. i spoke to a site foreman when they first started carrying out the work on the houses and was told it was a funded scheme by the government and a energy company EDF i think. He told me that they were doing the council owned properties first the rest of houses in my street and we would be informed by a letter on how to apply to have the external insulation work carried out for a pound (ยฃ1) so i waited for the letter and but never saw it, so i can only assume that i threw it away with piles of other junk mail i receive. i managed to speak to another site supervisor about a month a go only to be informed that i was to late and the houses they were doing at present were the last as funding was no longer available and the site manager had moved onto another project. i asked the supervisor if the site manager could come and visit me the next time they were in the area to find out what options i had or were available to me to get my house upto to same standard as the rest of my street (see photo added by site admin 2 aug 2013 less roof) , but nothing ever came of it so now i am stuck in a house that looks out of place on my street. so any information about any other similar funded schemes would be a great help. thank you very much

  35. Hello Ed and Admin

Many thanks for the welcome. There seem to be plenty of BISF houses in Taunton. Entire streets of them, in fact. I’ll be able to supply more street names once I get down there, but at the moment I’m still waiting for a completion date. ‘My’ own house has a tiled roof, so that’s at least one upgrade from the initial build. The semi-attached house next door also has tiles, but my other future neighbour has a corrugated roof (hopefully not with asbestos in it).

I’m looking forward to exploring the nearby countryside on my bicycle, and can’t wait to get down there.

    All the best

  36. Hello Pete33, the warmest of welcomes to our community! Like Ed, I was very surprised to find BISF properties in Taunton. I have added Four more streets to the register including Quantock, Triscombe, Stowey and Holford Road.
It looks like many of the properties have undergone a renovation in the past which is always good to see. Plus, having such a large area of open countryside on your doorstep must be a massive bonus! Keep us updated with the process and I hope all goes smoothly for you. :0)

  37. Hello from a brand new member of the club.

I’m in the process of purchasing a BISF house in Quantock Road, Taunton, Somerset. In fact, there are a large number of BISF houses in the North Taunton area, so there’s plenty to be added to your database. I don’t have any photos yet, other than those on Google Street View, but I’ll take some as soon as I move in (if the solicitors ever get a move on and complete!).

  38. Agreed Ed, It’s certainly a surprise to see. I can only presume that the owners have made use of the area directly under the apex to produce a single room judging by the location of the windows.

  39. Thanks for the addition Philt
It’s been added to the list. In fact located along Appleton Road I can see what looks like the first ever BISF loft conversion that we have ever seen. That is presuming it is indeed a conversion. You can make out a side window and a Velux style roof window.
A great addition to the street listings, many thanks.

  40. Hi Greg, thank you for your excellent additions to the list and apologies for the delay in replying.
You are correct that there is indeed a cross member where you would like the door to be situated but many owners have removed this without any major problems.
How long have have you been working on the house and is it coming together as you hoped?

  41. I’m a new member and would like to report of a Number of BISF A1 type houses in Braintree Essex. I live on Rosemary Avenue CM7 2TB where there are 68 semi detached, 20 on Gilchrest way, 32 on Coldnailhurst Avenue, 4 on Deanery Hill, 44 on Deanery Gardens, 10 on Dean Rogers Place and a terrace of three odd prefabs on Dean Rogers Place. I have done alot of work on the house by gutting the internal walls and changing the layout with new 2×4″ stud walls, plaster board and insulating it with reflective foil insulation. I have put some patio doors in where the dining room window was and block off the existing back door to make the kitchen bigger. I want to put a door to the outside coal storage room from the bottom of the staircase and make it a utility room. I think there is a metal cross member behind in the wall. Can anyone confirm this? Greg

  42. wow that is a great selection of renovations. Id love to know the process/ cost involved in getting the upper part rendered like most of those have had done. Really makes the house look very modern but Ive not seen it done before, and cant work out what they did with the orignal cladding!

  43. Thank you Mubse!
Another great selection of properties and all with timber outbuildings rather than block.
The roofing sheets also appear to have fared a lot better than the corrugated asbestos sheets normally used.

    Many thanks

  44. Thank you for your locations JS, there really are some nice examples of renovated properties in the area along with one house built on a slope that must have the deepest ground floor level that I have ever seen!

A welcome addition to the register!

  45. Hello Kerry
What a fantastic recollection of your memories of living in a BISF house and the amount of detail was amazing. It reminded me of the very first time I walked into one at the age of 16! It was in a similar condition back then with the old steel tall kitchen units and steel windows.
I have moved the post to the memories thread, I hope you don’t mind as I would like to encourage more people to share similar amazing recollections as you have. It gives such a valuable insight into the houses as they were before many of the typically modern renovations occurred that we see today.
I shall update your locations tomorrow due to the late hour but once again thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, they have made my day!

    The new location is here
It’s from an old post that I have resurrected. ๐Ÿ™‚

  46. I hope my previous two posts have given happy memories to other people who lived in these style houses. For me, it was a great house to grow up in. I still vividly remember the sound of the house creaking and banging on a summers evening – the sound of running up & downstairs (and which stairs creaked), the sound of the original front door shutting. Also the sound of walking on the footpaths around the houses.

I grew up in one of the many BISF Steel Houses in Dronfield, Derbyshire. I’ve noticed none of them are on your list, so here’s a list of all if the, which you can hopefully add. They are all still standing and lived in today.

Orchard Square, Dronfield Woodhouse, Derbyshire, S18 – 8 houses
Holm Close, Dronfield Woodhouse, Derbyshire, S18 – 14 houses
Fairview Road, Dronfield, Derbyshire – 20 houses
Cecil Road, Deonfield, Derbyshire, S18 – 30 houses
Chiverton Close, Dronfield, Derbyshire, S18 – 12 houses
Snape Hill Close, Dronfield, Derbyshire, S18 – 16 houses

There are also some in the neighbouring village of Unstone, so here’s a list of those.

    Sheffield Road, Unstone, S18 – 10 houses
    Brierley Road, Unstone, S18 – 18 houses
    Loundes Road, Unstone, S18 – 50 houses

I hope this information helps. As you can see, there are almost 200 BISF Steel Houses here that maybe you didn’t know about.

  47. Hi Rai and welcome to the site! I looked into having solar panels put on my roof at Freeview Road, Bath, BA2 1DS, but hardly anyone would fit them because of the roof type (asbestos cement sheets on a steel structure) and the only quote I did get was a lot higher than the going rate.

  48.  My BISF house is on Denshaw Grove, Morley, Leeds LS27 with 2.8 kw solar panels on the roof (not on Google maps yet). Also I found BISF houses on Eastleigh Drive, Leigh Road and Westerton Road in Tingley, Wakefield, WF3

  49. Hi Sue and welcome. Maybe I can help with your mortgage problems as I bought my house last December and although there were a few snags it wasn’t too difficult. What problems are you having?

  50. *cf55jj and also heol deva in caerau cardiff have BISF constructed houses. I know because I live in one and am finding it difficult to obtain a mortgage to buy it!!

  51. Hello Ant, warmest of welcomes and thank you for your contribution to the BISF register.
I’ve hunted on Google Maps and can’t locate the exact streets that have BISF houses in them.
Do you know one or two of the road names? If I can locate just one street the rest should be easy to find.

    Many thanks

  52. Thank you for those valuable additions Awelshy! It’s good to see more properties being added to the list for Wales.
As the list gets longer it becomes harder to find those few that are missing.
Your submissions are very much appreciated and the warmest of welcomes to the site.

  53. Please add Harcourt Green in Wantage, Oxfordshire. It is a small development of 32 BISF homes around a small green area. I will upload pictures at a later date. Many of the houses have been updated and extended (including a whole NEW 3-bed attached house) whilst many remain in their original condition.

  54. Hi DavenJules
Thank you for a selection of superb additions to the list and the very first to come from Aylesbury!

Really glad to hear you’re enjoying your BISF house. I have pondered the the thought of a two storey extension for a few years now but I have found that the longer I leave it the more expensive it gets.
Prices seem to have ballooned recently which has really put me off the idea along with some of the technical aspects of where the door can be located into the extension due to building regs etc, it is a bit of a lottery really as to what advice you get from the planning dept. ๐Ÿ™

Great to have you on board and look forward to hearing more from you.

    Marc ๐Ÿ™‚

  55. Our street is not on the list

    Russell Avenue, Aylesbury, Bucks HP21
There are also an number of others:-
    Thrasher Road
    Carrington Road
    Prebendal Avenue
    Churchill Avenue
    Old Stoke Road
    Taylor Road
    Grenville Road

We have lived here for 12 years and love the house. We installed a conservatory onto the rear dining room and removed the window making a larger living space. We are considering a two storey side extension but need to save up first!

  56. Thanks for the entry Tanya ๐Ÿ™‚

It sounds like you have undertaken a lot of improvement already.
We hope the site will help you in any forthcoming projects.

BTW that lake at the rear of some of the properties looks amazing with some lucky owners houses backing right down to the water.

It Looks like a great place.

  57. Hi,

I don’t think that my street is on your list yet…

Bravington Close Shepperton, Middlesex TW17 0JG

Been in 2 years now, new Decra roof, new windows….. insulation & Cladding next. Considering the following systems Tata, Wetheryby & Marley Eternit Weatherboarding. Looking forwards to exploring the site and finding other suggestions.

  58. Hi Paul, Welcome to the site and thank you for your comments, they are very much appreciated.
Thank you too for you submission, Hillsyde looks like a really nice spot and perhaps the only place I have seen where most houses are painted the same colour.

Please let us know how your son gets on with his purchase, as you have probably already found out by reading our site, the most common problem faced is sadly one of ignorance on the side of valuers and lending companies.
If he encounters any problems or you need any help just ask and we will always do our best to help.

  59. Thank you for those Richsmif, those are the first we have had in Sunbury! I wonder if the council have any images of the demolition site that you mentioned. I will have to chase that up and see if we can get any images.

A warm welcome too btw and thank you for your valuable contribution.

  60. Thanks for those Denton, I had no idea any BISF houses existed in Great Barr!
A great contribution with many thanks, it really is surprising how many roads actually exist and yest they do keep popping up :0)

  61. Brilliant thanks Nigel, I’d already got Chedworth and Bude but not the others you mentioned. I thought I had covered Portsmouth but youve found some very nice examples for us!

Many thanks for your contribution it is very much appreciated.

  62. Thanks for those Ed, the area has a small village look with some very nice old houses, brightly coloured BISF properties and lots of rolling countryside!

It looks like a great place.

  63. Doing some research for my son as he is considering buying a BISF house . Came across this site which is very helpfull .
Hillsyde crescent , Thornley, Co. Durham can be added to your list.

  64. Elm Drive, Sunbury-On-Thames, TW16 5NX
    Limes Cresent, Sunbury-On-Thames

There was a large estate near Long Lane Stanwell, TW19…., but most have been flattened now with new houses been built. ๐Ÿ™

  65. Just found a few more BISF roads:

    Langdale Road, Great Barr, Birmingham
    Kirkstone Crescent, Great Barr, Birmingham
    Grasmere Close, Great Barr, Birmingham
Ennerdale Road, , Great Barr, Birmingham

They crop up all over the place, don’t they.

  66. Hi nice web page. My family have lived in a BISF house for over forty years. Here are a few more roads in Palusgrove, Portsmouth that have BISF Houses.
    Newbolt Road PO6
    Falmouth Road PO6
    Bude Close PO6
    Severn Close PO6
    Cheadworth Cresent PO6

  67. I was surprised to find there are more BISF houses in Bath today, on the other side of town from here. I’ve lived here most of my life and it’s not a very big place but I’d never seen them before, but today while going for a walk up onto Kelston Roundhill I could see some more in Weston.

They are at Eastfield Avenue, The Weal and Holcombe Green, Weston, Bath.

  68. You can add Sullivan Road, Elgar Road and Elgar Close in Southampton to your list, there are a few other streets around this way with BISF but I don’t know their names.

  69. all the land up to the tree line will be mine enough room for a double garage looks bigger than it is, to the side of house is common land so only one neighbor,
needs a lot of work inside think it has original kitchen,
apologies for photos i didn’t take them

  70. Hey Tony, looks like a nice example, is all that land to the side yours also?

I must agree it’s in a smashing location, I expect the garden is huge.

  71. Thank you for those Tony, apologies for the delay in updating the list as have been away visiting various archives finding out more info.

I did think we were a bit thin on the ground with Welsh listings, your input is very welcome. :0)

Welcome to club as well, it would be great to hear how your move goes and don’t forget to take some photos if do any work.
You’ve certainly picked a stunning area to move too, it looks amazing!

  72. login rd, waunarlwydd, swansea,
    swansea rd, waunarlwydd, swansea,
    cwmbach rd, waunarlwydd, swansea,
    also buying one myself in,
    waunarlwydd rd, waunarlwydd, swansea
can you add these to list.
    50+ houses in all

  73. Thinking about it, the layout sounds similar in concept to that described in Coventry with the houses facing away from the traffic.

The street sign at the entrance to that little road stub says Shaws Way nos 1-12, I can see it but not quite read it from the back bedroom window!

You can also see the fronts of the BISF houses in Shaws Way from the bottom (northern end) of Poolemead Rd and Long Valley Rd. Sandwiched between them are three surviving ‘Cornish’ houses.

You’re welcome as always Marc ๐Ÿ™‚

  74. I think you could well be right Ed.
Bing maps shops Watery lane as finishing just before the pathway leading to the houses.

I will go by your local knowledge on this one. I was concerned that they could remain un-catalogued but looking at the map the houses can still be viewed by people looking along Shaws Way on Google.

Thanks for the Eagle Eye though Ed as we really do need to keep the list as accurate as possible and I appreciate your help very much.

  75. I’m not sure that little road stub even has a name, but the houses around it have Shaws Way addresses – the bungalow and the three pairs of traditionally-built houses next to the green. As far as I know Watery Lane is just the name for the road between Newton Rd and the Freeview Road/Pennard Green/Shaws Way crossroads. I think Google have just made a small mistake.

My partner used to live in one of those BISF houses, and I remember it had a Shaws Way address.

  76. Thanks for spotting those Ed, I must have had Bristol on the brain that day :0)

I was editing the page last weekend placing a country flag beside each location only to find the HTML coding went beserk and cauisng me to lose all the links for the entire page.
So the flags were binned and colour coding used but even there the black wants to be grey in the text lol

I’ve corrected those you mentioned and placed a link to the Watery Lane location. It’s showing on maps as a slip road but as I don’t have local knowledge I can’t confirm this.
Can you take a look and let me know what you think?

    Gratitude as always my friend

  77. Hi Marc, just to let you know Cleve Green, Shaws Way and Watery Lane are in Bath not Bristol. Also, I don’t think there any BISF houses that are actually on Watery Lane although you can see them from Watery Lane – their addresses are actually Shaws Way even though the road is behind the houses (the houses have been built the ‘wrong’ way round).

Another one for you is Silbury Road, Ashton Vale, Bristol, which is a different part of Bristol from those you’ve already got.

  78. Theres a few more to the east of New Century St and to the east Pergwm St, also in Trealaw. (I’ve heard people say there are some in Merthyr but I’m not sure where).

  79. Hey Sharlenel1 thank you so much for those additions, they will keep me busy for a while :0)
I shall update the list as soon as I have finished another article.

Great to hear you are moving back into a BISF house!
Don’t forget to take some photos as we really do love to see before and after shots as it inspires lots of readers.

Has your new house already been renovated or is there much to do before you move in?

  80. Am in the process of moving into a BISF house after growing up in one.
Cant see Swansea on the list anywhere, there are three seperate council areas full of BISF houses

Gendros is the one i am familiar with road names – upper kings head road, moorview road, gendros avenue west, gendros avenue east, penrhos place, pentregethin road

There are also BISF houses in penlan, westcross and waunarlwydd. Swansea.

  81. You’re welcome, I’m rather fascinated to know where else they are too. There are more in Silbury Road, Ashton Vale, Bristol. There may be more in that area, but as there are a lot of mid-20th Century houses in that part of Bristol they don’t stand out so much. You can also see the odd true prefab in that area still too.

  82. Thank you kindly for those Ed, there were some sneaky ones hidden away there on the other side of the Motorway lol that could have easily been missed.

The list is getting much longer than I anticipated but glad it's developing so well.

I will carry on updating the rest of the links this week.

Your input as always is very much appreciated my friend.

  83. Wow, I must say that the list has grown so much since I last viewed the page.

Well done everyone, I never really realised how many of these houses were around.

    Great work and very informative.

The links are a great touch too!

  84. Hawbush Road, Leamore, Walsall, WS3 1AG.

I lived in a BSIF house in this street. My parents moved in when it was new, I think in 1947 (I wasn't born till 1961 so can't totally confirm), and they moved out in 1985. The house is still there as far as I know, although they have demolished some in the street to make an access road to new houses at the rear of the site.

    Please add to the list

  85. Thank you both for your replys and also for the sample survey. It would be very useful as a comparison when our survey result arrives.

I have just found that there is another neigbouring street, Foster Road, in the same area in Cambridge (CB2) where there are some more BISF houses.

  86. Thank you for your kind comments and valuable input Sara.
The main focus of the site is provide as much factual information as possible and dispel some of the old myths and false assumptions that once surrounded BISF houses.
We've seen plenty of examples where paid professionals get it wrong about many aspects of these properties which only goes to show how deep these misconceptions are.
Our other aim is to raise the profile of the BISF house to its rightful place within the housing market and remind purchasers that they can be an excellent investment as Ed states.

We hope your survey goes well. I will try to dig out a typical survey report that I came across for a BISF and post it on the main page for you. It may help you understand in advance what the surveyor will be looking at.

  87. Hi Sara, I've found this site very useful too. I've only been in my BISF house for a month now, but I'm very pleased with it.

I've found though there are a lot of misconceptions about BISF houses, because a lot of people don't distinguish between the many types of prefabricated and semi-prefabricated house, some of which were structurally faulty. The plus side is you may be able to get a bargain!

One thing to watch out for is if the house still has its original asbestos roof. It's easy to recognise and not necessarily a problem, but apart from Halifax I don't know of any mortgage lenders who will accept an asbestos roof (and they may charge you for a survey just to decline it).

  88. Hi,
I find this website fascinating and very useful as we are in the process of buying a BISF house. Most people I speak to seem very cautious with these houses as they know so little about them. It is reassuring to see that they in fact proper houses built for long term usage.

To the list I’d add Paget Road and
Byron Square in Cambridge. These are in an area built around 1946 and has other types of pre-fab houses as well which I haven’t been able to identify.

We are having the house surveyed next week, I hope all will be in order.

Thanks, and keep up the good work.

  89. I forgot Shaws Way, which is next to the other four roads.

I have seen mentioned that there are three types of BISF house: A, B and C but a Google search doesn't reveal anything about the differences.

This photo shows one slightly different from mine:-

In Bath each house has its own chimney, which is in the middle of the house (the fireplace is on the wall opposite the sitting room window) but this Glasgow example has a shared chimney and the fireplace must be on the party wall. Also there is no outhouse, and an extra window in the side of the house downstairs while the front windows are closer to the end of the house.

  90. Steve, glad to hear that you haven't found any major problems.
I was talking to Tony Fuller – The Managing Director of Fuller & Sons of last week and he has a vast amount of experience with BISF steel framed properties. He echoed a similar reply in that despite many years of working on this type of property he had found no significant structural problems giving further testament to the design.

Thank you again for your input Steve, it is very much appreciated.

  91. Thank you Ed, every entry helps.
I see your point regarding the layouts on Google street view.
To me it seems unusual for the rear of the property to be in full open view to the street.
There are also some very subtle design changes to the placement of side windows and doors that I hope to catalogue in the near future.

  92. Here are some more from Bath:-

    Camley Green
    Freeview Road
    Newton Road
    Pennard Green

All of these have at least some BISF houses, interspersed with traditionally built houses and even a few prefabricated concrete houses (so-called Cornish houses I believe). Most of the latter have recently been demolished though.

I believe there are some in Bristol too, because I have seen a photo on the internet of a BISF house captioned as Bristol.

Locally a lot of the BISF and other nearby houses have an unusual layout in which the back of the house faces the road and the front door is accessed by a pedestrian pathway.

  93. I am surveying a BISF house in Western Avenue Epping Essex CM16. There are others, about 9 thers I think. Check street view if you want the numbers, they do stand out a bit from the trad builds.

They have been refurbished with external cladding, bnew roof upvc upvc cladding and windows.

    Found no problems to date.
