Thanks for the info, so i’m clear in your reply, can I take out the kitchen window and below to create a doorway and build a new kitchen? I have already had the window taken out of the dinning room to create an opening into a room my late father built. Would I need to have any additional steel work added as there would be the kitchen window converted to a doorway and the opening in the dinning room? would it be structurally safe?
Do you know of any builders experienced in BISF properties that I could get some quotes from who would take on jobs in Hanworth Middlesex?

Hi Siobhan, the main problem you face is that in the back wall of the house there is a steel stanchion in the corner of the house and one on each side of the kitchen window, as well as diagonal bracing between the corner of the house and the window. Therefore it would not be a simple matter to enlarge the room by extending it – it would require some major structural steelwork modifications.

Usually extensions to BISF houses are built as a complete new room or rooms, accessed from the original house by converting a window into a doorway.

Here is a BISF house under construction from the side. The kitchen in the left corner area so you can see where the kitchen window and back door are.

Hi, Which direction were you planning to extend your kitchen? Were you looking at going backward into the garden or to the side into the out building area?
