Does anyone know if it’s possible or have experience of removing the rear external wall in order to enlarge the kitchen and dinning room with an open plan extension?

Hi Bren
Just to clarify, do you actually mean to remove the outer back wall of the property which would then lead into a new extension area?

If so, yes it can be done but much will depend on your local planning dept.

Many planners state that access from the dining room into a rear extension can only be made through existing openings. I.e where the rear windows or patio doors are now as steel stanchions run vertically down each side of the window frame, in between which would be your opening.

Other planners will let you open up the rear wall providing sufficient support is put in place using an RSJ to take the load of the upper floor.
If this is your plan then I would strongly suggest using a builder who is familiar with BISF construction before starting any work.

I hope this helps.
