My wife and I are about to take the plunge into BISF home ownership, and firstly, we’d like to thank Marc and all of the contributors to these fora for the wealth of advice and information contained on this site. It has been an invaluable resource for our decision making.
Onto our question: can anyone tell us if they have come across any issues with (lack of) mobile phone signals in this type of steel-framed construction? (this is particularly important to us as my wife is hearing impaired and has trouble with landline calls).
Thank you in advance and looking forward to the replies…
Thank you for your kind words and thanks as always to Ed, who is a great asset to our community.
As Ed stated, there’s not generally any problems with signal but I do indeed live in a mobile phone blackspot that affects a dozen or so houses in my street.
To combat the very poor mobile signal that I have, my phone provider, EE kindly sent me a signal box device that plugs directly into my wifi.
As a result, I can now get a full 5 bar signal on my mobile phone as opposed to one bar or none at all.
The device can be seen here: http://ee.co.uk/business/large/your-office/boosting-indoor-signal/signal-box
Obviously, such devices are provider specific but ee sent me mine free of charge due to the very poor signal I receive. It effectively routes all my calls through my wifi and call charges remain the same.
Best of work with your purchase and apologies for the delay in replying.
I’ve had a long list of events that have kept me offline for a while including a broken hand and broken computer but hopefully a new pc will arrive soon and I should be back to normal.
Do let us know how you get on and once again, good luck and best wishes from us all.
Hi and welcome, I have never heard of this being an issue but if you are viewing a house it may be worth taking your phone(s) along to check coverage.
I get excellent coverage here, but I’m very close to the transmitters on the lighting towers at Bath City FC 🙂 I think the location of the house and the local topography will make a lot more difference than than what is made from. For example my parents get very poor mobile phone coverage downstairs because their (traditional) house is on a steep hillside that blocks the signal.
