Can anyone tell me, are the steel stairs in my BiSF house structural? I would like to remove the existing staircase and replace with timber.

Hi Lollypop
Here’s a couple of images of the staircase being carried into the house during construction and one of a fitted replacement staircase.

The staircase shown hasn’t yet had the treads fitted so this will of course add to the weight if you are planning removal. If you still have the original bannister fitted, the upright support struts can be unbolted from the underside of the staircase.

Hope this helps

It’s not structural but I’d question the wisdom of replacing it. It’s all welded together so will never creak or get loose steps etc as wooden stairs can. It’s a better solution than a timber staircase functionally, just because most houses have wooden staircases doesn’t mean they are any better. I think some people think because some things are different in a BISF house from a traditional house, that makes them inferior, but that’s not necessarily the case.
