Having just bought our type A1 we are planning some major changes. Reading all the posts on here I’m pretty confident about taking out walls, blocking up doorways, taking out cupboards, taking out chimney breast and flue. The only things not answered are. Has anyone taken out the bannisters as we want to replace ours with a glass one? We also want to replace the window in the dining room with french windows but not certain if we need to put supports in.

I forgot to say, I have recently carried out a dining room window to patio door conversion with my good friend Mat and we do have a pretty good selection of photographs that we took during the conversion.

I shall post these for you as soon as I have dug them out nd optimized them for web viewing.

The process is again pretty straightforward and it took two of us around two days to complete the job because we did run into a few issues that we had to resolve.

Regards

Marc

Here’s the photograph of the bracket with the upright removed.

Hi Simon,
you should find taking out the old bannister rails to be pretty straightforward as each upright support is literally bolted or clamped to the staircase from the underside.
In you look underneath you will see the steel bracket that holds the support into place, just release the bolts and pull the supports out from above.

I have posted and image below to show the bracket.

You just need to decide if you are going to get new supports made up chrome for example and check if these existing bracket locations will be suitably spaced and be thick enough to support the new glass.
I’ve considered doing this to several properties but just having got round to trying it yet. It will be interesting to see how you get on.
